Choosing what to wear for family beach photos doesn’t have to be stressful. The right outfits can make your photos feel timeless, beautiful, and pulled together—without everyone looking like they are wearing the exact same thing.

After 27 years of photographing families, I’ve learned that the secret is to coordinate, not match. Start with a color palette you love, then mix complementary shades, textures, and subtle patterns throughout your family’s outfits.

Here along 30A and Florida’s Emerald Coast, I especially love cream and ivory instead of stark white, along with soft blues, blush pinks, greens, navy, and warm neutrals. These colors photograph beautifully against our sugar-white sand, Gulf water, and gorgeous coastal light.

Coastal Red + Blue

Red, soft blue, and cream create such a classic coastal look for family beach photos. I love this combination because it adds a little color while still feeling timeless against the white sand and blue-green water of the Emerald Coast.

Notice that everyone doesn't have to wear every color. Mom can wear blue, Dad can wear cream and soft blue, while the girls bring in the red. The colors coordinate without matching—and that's exactly what we want.

This palette is especially beautiful for 30A family beach photos, summer vacations, and even patriotic family sessions without feeling overly themed.

More Beach Family Outfit Inspiration

There is no single “perfect” color palette for beach family photos. The best look is one that complements your family’s style while still working beautifully with the colors of the coast.

I’ve put together several of my favorite combinations—from soft pinks and greens to coastal blues, creams, warm neutrals, and richer pops of color. Use these looks as inspiration, mix and match pieces you love, and remember: the goal is to coordinate, not match.

What to Wear for Beach Family Photos

Coordinate, Don’t Match

One of the biggest mistakes families make is thinking everyone needs to wear the same color. Instead, choose two to four complementary colors and spread them throughout the family.

I love mixing different shades, textures, and subtle patterns. This gives your photos dimension while still making everyone look beautifully coordinated.

For beach sessions, I especially love cream and ivory instead of stark white. Cream is softer, warmer, and photographs beautifully against the sand and water.

Your outfits should look like they belong together—but your family should still look like you.

What to Avoid for Beach Family Photos

Just as important as knowing what photographs beautifully is choosing clothing that will help you feel comfortable and confident in your photos.

Large logos or graphics: These can pull attention away from the people in the photograph.
Neon or extremely bright colors: Very bright colors can reflect unwanted color onto skin and can compete with the softer colors of the beach.
Everyone wearing the exact same thing: Coordinate instead of matching. Your outfits should look like they belong together without looking like a uniform.
Don’t be afraid to mix patterns: Florals, stripes, and other patterns can absolutely work together when they are within the same color palette. Mixing patterns, colors, and textures can actually add beautiful dimension to your photographs when everything coordinates.
Think about the things you’re self-conscious about: If you don’t love your arms in photographs, don’t choose a sleeveless dress just because you love how it looks on the model. Choose sleeves or a style that makes you feel confident. The same goes for any area you tend to worry about when you see yourself in photos.
Don’t sacrifice comfort for the outfit: If you’re constantly pulling at a dress, adjusting a shirt, or worrying about how something fits, it can affect how relaxed you feel during your session.

Most importantly, wear something you feel beautiful and confident in. I want you enjoying your family, the beach, and the experience—not worrying about your clothes.

What Should Mom Wear for Beach Family Photos?

I usually recommend starting with Mom’s outfit first and building the rest of the family around her. Find something you feel beautiful and confident in, then pull colors from your outfit to coordinate everyone else.

Dresses photograph beautifully at the beach because they add movement and softness. Flowy fabrics are especially pretty when we get a little Gulf breeze, but your dress doesn’t have to be long. A shorter dress can photograph beautifully too—the most important thing is choosing a style that flatters you.

Think about how you normally feel when you see yourself in photos. If you don’t love your arms, choose sleeves. If you’re uncomfortable with a certain neckline or fitted waist, don’t convince yourself to wear it just because it looks beautiful on someone else.

And remember, you do not need to wear white. I actually prefer cream, ivory, soft colors, and beautiful patterns for beach portraits.

Start with Mom, then coordinate everyone else around her. It makes dressing the entire family so much easier.

What Should Dad and the Kids Wear?

Once Mom’s outfit is chosen, dressing everyone else becomes much easier. Pull two or three colors from her outfit and use those throughout Dad’s and the kids’ clothing.

For Dad, I love simple, classic pieces—linen or lightweight button-down shirts, polos, or textured shirts paired with neutral shorts or pants. Cream, tan, soft blue, navy, and muted colors photograph beautifully at the beach.

For the kids, this is a great place to have a little fun. Dresses, rompers, overalls, button-downs, and subtle patterns all photograph beautifully. The kids do not need to match each other. Mixing florals, stripes, solids, and textures can look amazing as long as everything stays within your overall color palette.

Most importantly, make sure children can move, play, sit, and be comfortable in what they're wearing. Some of my favorite images happen when kids are running, laughing, playing in the sand, and simply being themselves.

One Last Tip From Your Photographer

When you're planning your outfits, lay everything out together before your session. You can even take a quick photo with your phone. It makes it much easier to see if the colors, patterns, and textures work together.

And don't overthink it. Your clothing should complement your photographs—not become the focus of them. At the end of the day, what matters most is your family, your connection, and capturing this season of your lives together.
